Data Integration and Sharing Workshop

Understanding and solving data integration and sharing problems

13 - 14 September 2005

Kings College, Cambridge, UK

Day 2

09.00 - 10.30 Data integration - how to make the whole greater than the sum of parts, by Kais Al-Timimi, and Roger Eatwell

Data integration is not simply about the mechanics of auditing, cleansing and consolidating data from different sources. A data integration project presents an ideal opportunity for the organisation to examine its business processes, their objectives and priorities. The session will give guidance on how to identify and extract value from corporate information. It will also demonstrate how the value of product information as a whole can be made much greater than the sum of the parts.

10.30 - 11.00 Break

11.00 - 12.30 Case study - setting out the problem

In this interactive session a practical data integration scenario will be described and developed. The scenario will represent a typical application derived from the Aerospace & Defence sector and incorporate the  use of PLCS (Product Lifecycle Support - ISO 10303 - AP239). The techniques that will be discussed and used are equally applicable in other industry sectors when using the relevant use of the  standards, e.g. the EPISTLE model in the process industry.

12.30 - 13.45 Lunch

13.45 - 15.00 Case study - working through the solution

This session starts with utilising data quality tools in the context of the chosen scenario and data sources to gain an understanding of the current quality of the data through profiling. This is followed by:

  • Undertaking the task of cleansing the data and providing a framework for ongoing data quality improvement.

  • Use techniques and approaches to integrate information from the chosen sources and present according to a unified business model.

  • Identification and loading of the model and the process of representing information according to the common business model

15.00 - 15.10 Short Break

15.10 - 16.00 Summing up and Group Discussion
